Melasma and Hyperpigmentation - SPF50 v/s SPF100+

Dr. Avinash Sharma 484 Views

SPF 50 provides high UVB protection when applied correctly; however, real-world use often results in lower protection because sunscreen is frequently underapplied, applied unevenly, not reapplied, or removed by sweating and rubbing. Evidence from actual-use studies demonstrated that SPF 100+ provides greater protection against sunburn and erythema than SPF 50+, offering a larger margin of protection under routine conditions. This additional protection may be particularly relevant for patients with recurrent melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), high sun exposure, or poor adherence to sunscreen application. The choice between SPF 50 and SPF 100+ should be guided by individual patient risk, exposure patterns, and the likelihood of achieving adequate sunscreen use.[1][2]
